Verline Scott, 90, died peacefully in her home on October 8, 2023 at 7 pm. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Slaton. Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery, Slaton under the direction of Griffin Mortuary, Visitations will be held Friday, October 13, 2023, from 5 -7 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary. Verline Washington was born April 10,1933 to Callie and Benjamin Washington in Bryan,Texas. She was the fifth child of six children. . After living a few years in Bryan, the Washington family moved to Wilson,Texas, a small farming town about 10 miles southwest of Slaton. They resided there for five years before moving to Slaton. On February 21, 1953 at age 20, Verline married Beno Andrew Scott in Slaton, Texas and from this union came eleven children. She is preceded in death by two of her children: Bennie Jean and Christopher Columbus Scott. Verline worked for Jackson’s grocery, Earl’s Grocery, and Handy Hut convenience store. She became the owner of Earl’s Grocery on December 30, 1987 and operated the store for twenty-four years up until she retired. She was an award-winning Avon representative for 41 years. In January of 2003 she was on the Board of Directors and a Slaton Museum Association officer. In addition, she attended many of the Slaton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meetings. Verline, also known as Sister Scott, was a member of Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Slaton, Texas for over 70 years. From an early age, as a single young lady, she played an active role as the secretary. She also served on the Deaconess Board. Years later when Reverend Beno Scott, Sr. accepted his call to ministry and became associate pastor of Triumph, Verline assumed her role as First Lady. She served by his side until the day he died. She was a praying woman, who trusted in God all of her life. She freely gave of her time visiting the sick, listening to others, offering sound advice and was always willing to do anything she could to help those in need. She was proud of her accomplishment of reading the Bible from cover to cover four times. Verline is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin McKinley and Callie Jones Washington; siblings, Ruby May Barnes, and Alexander Washington; daughter-in-law, Sonia Scott. She leaves to cherish her memory: siblings: Ivory Lee Washington, Flagstaff AZ, Florine Williams and Catherine Armstrong of Phoenix, AZ. children: Teddy (Beverly) Scott of Pampa, TX; Cynthia (Kenneth) Shields of Round Rock, TX; Chris (Heenan) Johnson III of Lubbock, TX; Beno (Paulette) Scott, Jr. of Amarillo, TX; Al Scott of Desoto, TX; Mark Scott of Cedar Park, TX; Marshall Scott of Garland, TX; Valerie (Terry) Williams of Leander, TX; and Stevon (Autumn) of Roseville, CA. 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Verline was known for her shy, friendly demeanor, her great love of beautiful hats and fashionable suits and accessories. She was always well dressed and will be dearly missed.
