Margaret Martha Okra who would later affectionately be called Maggie, was born on a warm summer day on the 18th of June in 1944 in the smal southern town of Trawick, Texas to parents Elishie and Annie Lee "Percy" (Esco) Bass. She and her brothers and sisters grew up surrounded by the love and care of an abundance of family.
At an early age she became interested in sports, not just watching games but actively participating. After graduating from CL Simon High School in Cushing, Texas she received a basketball scholarship to Tyler Junior College. Little did she know her love of sports would be the catalyst for her becoming an advocate, a promoter, and a cheerleader to her family when it came to softball, basketball, bowling, track, fishing-you name it.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, George Okra; her parents; her brother, Charles Bass; brothers-in-law, Reuben Hardaway and Allen Junior Wilks; her sisters, Shirley Hardaway and Ruthie Wilks; and her sister-in-law, Shirley Bass.
Margaret's family includes her four children; Rebecca J. Holmes (Jerome), Geroge Randy Okra, Gerald R. Okra, and Sharon A. Okra; ten grandchildren, Darnell Okra (Anna), Damarcus Okra (Chezare), Oscar Okra, Tiera Okra, Janêa Holmes, Alexander Goll, Air A Shay Okra, Oddysey Okra, Janlab Story, Jaraiy Huguley, many great and great great grandchildren. Her three brothers; Delbert Bass (Shirley), LV Bass (Dianna), and FL Bass (Earlene), her sister Mîna Sims (Bobby Sr), her sister-in-law, Helen Bass; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, caring and supportive family friends; like a daughter, Phyllis Rubal, like a son Patrick Thompson, and even strangers she stopped to talk to or give a word of encouragement too.
Margaret was also an advocate for and a lover of dogs: Kona, Chubby, Sidney, Jennifer, Shadow, Champ, and Rex will all hold a special place in her heart.
