Joe C. Pope, 79, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Greater St. Luke Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Viewing will be held Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Griffin Mortuary from 2 - 5 p.m. Joe C. Pope, age 79, was born on December 25, 1943, to the parentage of the late Fred and Katherine Thomas-White, Jr. of Lubbock, TX. Joe attended Lubbock Public Schools, graduating from Dunbar High School where he played football. Joe loved sports, especially his Dallas Cowboys. He worked at Frito-Lay for 25 years and was a member of Greater St. Luke Baptist Church. Joe was a quiet man but faithful to his wife of 25 years, Paula and truly loved his family, he was a great friend. Joe was also known as Papa Pope and Mr. Huxtable. He brought laughter and light to whomever he met. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Fred White, Jr. and Katherine Thomas-White, son Dexter Pope, sister Petty D. White, brothers Don Allen, Alvin E. White, Sr., and David Bernard White, and stepdaughter Sparkles Bynum. Joe leaves to cherish his memory; his wife Paula Joyce Pope, his daughter Feicia Hood, his sons Oscar Boyd, Haney Boyd, and Travis Boyd, his sisters Freddie Mae Johnson, Janice L. Ross, and Kathleen White McCullough; his brother, Jeff White (Yolanda); grandchildren Lekisha Thompson-Sweargin, his great granddaughters, Ken’Shavia Haskin, Zi’Nasia Sweargin, Lily Sweargin, and Miracle Sweargin, his great grandson, Ja’Vondrick Sweargin, his great-great granddaughter, Ma’Kayla Haskin; a host of other relatives and friends.
